Ok, this is actually not that difficult.
1. Up at the top click on "profile"
2. The first tab is information (you can make your username whatever you want and change it at anytime)
3. You shouldn't have to mess with the prefrences tab much at all.
4. Update the signature page with your own signature, etc.
5. Update the AVATAR page with a small photo by clicking browse and choose a small sized photo that will appear everytime you post.
That is basically it, nothing else really needs attention.
